International Placement Year
About the International Placement Year
The International Placement Year is a compulsory part of most of our Undergraduate programmes, and typically involves students spending up to a year abroad during the third year of full-time study.
Nationally only one in four language students spends their time abroad in paid employment. At Salford the majority of our students work for part or all of their placement year and many of these positions are paid.
Enhance your career prospects with a Languages' work placement
When looking for work, our students benefit from our extensive, well established network of placement providers including large multinationals such as Guinness, Deutsche Bank, Mercedes-Benz and Alcatel.
Quite different from typical student part-time work in retailing or catering, a Languages’ work placement provides you with practical experience with an employer in a foreign country, so you’ve a foot on the career ladder before you’ve even left university. Where possible you are given an opportunity to further develop the specific skills you are studying e.g. Translation or teaching English as a foreign language.
Study abroad during your placement year
You may wish to combine a work placement with a period of study abroad, or indeed spend the year in a study placement. The School has links with universities across Europe, the Far East and the Arabic world, including institutions specialising in Translation and Interpreting. And whatever you do, you will be looked after by our experienced international placement year tutors who support you throughout your placement.
