I have been at Salford since 1990 and am currently Head of the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences having previously been Head of the School of Languages, senior lecturer in French and linguistics and Associate Head of School (Teaching & Learning). In 1992 I was visiting Erasmus lecturer at the Institut supérieur de traducteurs et d’interprètes in Brussels and in 1998 I was visiting professor at the University of Toulouse—le Mirail. I have also taught at the Universities of Manchester and York.
After reading modern languages (French and German) at the University of Bradford I worked for a short time as a translator and interpreter in France and Germany before returning to the UK for postgraduate study in linguistics at the University of York where I completed an MA in 1990 and a doctorate in 1996.
My academic interests focus on the French language and cross translation & interpreting studies (where I have taught widely on the School’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes) and linguistics (where in addition to teaching I have delivered several conference papers and published a number of books, journal articles, book chapters and book reviews).
Outside Salford I am editor of the Transactions of the Philological Society and a member of the advisory editorial board of the Journal of French Language Studies. Previously I was chair of the Linguistics Specialist Advisory Group of the UK Higher Education Academy’s Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, linguistics representative on the Executive Committee of the University Council of Modern Languages, member of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain’s Education Committee, and founding chair of the University Council of General and Applied Linguistics.
