RAE 2008 - Pleasing results for the University of Salford and the School of Languages
Thursday, 1 January 2009
The University of Salford has received excellent results for the four units of submission in which School of Languages staff were returned in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise: on average more than 70% of returns within these units were rated as being of international qualityLinguistics
Linguistics made its RAE debut in 2008 with a return of 9.6 FTE researchers from Linguistics and Translation Studies. The results showed that 75% of our research activity was assessed as being of international quality (2* or above) and 35% was either “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” (4* and 3*). These results placed the submission as 14th among UK universities in terms of research power and 19th in terms of grade point average. This is a very good return for Linguistics. New appointments in the School of Languages together with the creation of the Centre for Research in Linguistics have allowed us to develop distinctive collaborations within the University and with partners in other institutions, particularly in the areas of Arabic linguistics, translation studies and semantics and pragmatics. We are now looking forward to build on this success.
