School of Languages’ scholarships and funding information

Information coming soon for 2012/13 entry

For 2011 entry

In the School of Languages we offer what we believe to be an unparalleled range of scholarships and fee exemptions to students beginning their studies in September 2011. These complement the University's own generous financial support package and scholarship schemes, including a £500 Bursary for all UK/EU entrants to Modern Languages’ programmes for each year of their course, where a language is studied in every year of their programme.

Please note that:
1)  where you are eligible for more than one scholarship or bursary, you will normally only be awarded the highest one. The exception to this is the Postgraduate Bursary for Italian outlined (in 1.22 and 2.23) below.
2) all scholarships and bursaries can be combined with the (Summer) English Study Plus discount outlined in below.
If you need any specific advice about financing your studies please go to the University site for student information at: www.isite.salford.ac.uk/money/

Salford University Subject Bursary

The University will award a £500 Bursary for all UK/EU entrants to Modern Languages’ programmes for each year of their course – the bursary is non means-tested so all students can benefit, however it is only available to students studying a language during each year of their course and so is not applicable to students on our BA (Hons) Linguistics programme where a modern foreign language is not studied on each year of the programme, or the BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics programme. These students can, however, benefit from the global placement bursary outlined below.
There is no application form for this Scholarship; they will be awarded automatically.
For further information about the Bursary please go to: www.isite.salford.ac.uk/money/help/grants/bursaries/ssb.php

Please note that students on the International Foundation Year are not eligible for this bursary.

Fee-exempt international placement year and global placement bursary

The international placement year (sometimes known as residence abroad or the year abroad) is a vital part of our four-year applied-language undergraduate degree programmes.

Salford will not normally charge for the international placement year, which takes place in the third year of undergraduate programmes. Furthermore most home/EU students undertaking their placement year in the EU are supported by an Erasmus grant, which currently provides you with an income of around €250 per month (amount varies in some countries).

In addition the University is offering a global placement bursary of £1,000 to any home/EU students not in receipt of the Salford Subject Bursary in languages, when two semesters are spent overseas, and £500 for one semester –this bursary is not means-tested so all students can benefit. This can apply to home/EU students on the BA (Hons) Linguistics programme (non-language streams) or BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics programme who are not eligible for the Salford Subject Bursary.
More details about the fee exemption and bursary schemes will be available at the School's various Open Days.
