Excellence in Applied Language Teaching

School of Languages

Our Language courses have careers in mind

University is about more than just learning, making friends and enjoying campus life – it’s ultimately about getting a good job. With well over forty years’ experience, at the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences we are committed to delivering excellence in applied language study which means that our programmes are designed to train linguists for work in the real world.

Making Languages Work

The principles of ‘making languages work’ and ‘educating for capability’ drive all of our programmes. We were among the first universities in the UK to establish a non-literary undergraduate languages programme and today more time is spent teaching and learning actual language skills than in many other leading language departments. At undergraduate level we teach high-level written and oral communication skills alongside transferable skills such as problem solving, report writing, presentations and group working.

Our language students benefit from placements

The real-world focus of our programmes helps to produce graduates who are particularly employable, having often carried out work placements as part of their programmes. At undergraduate level, for example, our students spend up to a year abroad on The International Placement Year during the third year of full-time study. We seek to prepare students for the year of International Placement through the curriculum (e.g. CV preparation, knowledge of the business environment and classes to enhance cultural awareness).

Great career prospects

We are committed to boosting your job prospects and preparing you for the world of work. With growing global integration, graduates with language skills are increasingly in demand. Recent statistics confirm that language graduates are among the most sought.
